POLICE are investigating after a house was reportedly set on fire in Basingstoke.

Emergency services are currently at the scene in Porter Road after the incident earlier this afternoon.

A spokesman for Hampshire Police said officers were called to the road just after 3.22pm following reports of a fire.

The blaze was put out but detectives were called in to investigate.

A spokesman said: "At this time this is being treated as arson and officers are currently in the area making enquiries."

This is the second arson in Porter Way in the last six months.

In March a man broke into the conservatory of a home in Porter Way and set alight to a sofa. The man was seen acting suspiciously in an alleyway close to the house before he broke into the garden.

A 39-year-old woman was in the house at the time looking after a three-year-old child.

She managed to get out of the property in time along with the child but both needed oxygen therapy.

It is not yet known if the two cases are linked.

Anyone with information should contact police on 101.
