HUNDREDS of homes in Basingstoke are without power this morning.

Residents took to social media to report power cuts in the Chineham area, with the power outage reportedly affecting the Chineham Medical Practice and a number of shops in the area.

The power cuts have also affected the traffic lights on the A33 towards Reading, leaving motorists not knowing who had right of way.

One Reading Road resident, who did not wish to be named said: “I was having my breakfast when my television just turned off.

“Next thing I hear my neighbours intruder alarm going off and I checked a few appliances around the home and they were all off.

“I went to check at my neighbours but they are at work because as you can hear the alarm is still going off.”

SSE, the electricity supply for the area and the National Grid, told the Gazette: “1,400 of our customers are currently without power in the Chineham and Old Basing area.

“Engineers are on site working to restore supplies and it's anticipated that all customers will be back on supply by 11:00am.

“SSEN would like to thank customers for their patience and apologise for any inconvenience this interruption to their supply has caused.”
