DOGS of all shapes and sizes paraded around an arena on Sunday to show off their best features.

The annual Barky Malarky event saw hundreds of people bring their canine companions along to War Memorial Park to take part in a dog show, and raise money for a good cause.

Categories included prettiest girl, waggiest tail, fancy dress, as well as a trophy for the best dog in the show.

Dog owners could also challenge their four-legged friend to have a go at some of the arena events.

Organised by a small committee of dog lovers to raise money and awareness of canine charities, the event has grown in popularity since launching in 2015, attracting 1,500 people this year.

Clair Ramshaw, who co-founded the event, said: “People see their dogs as part of the family now and the way that people treat them has changed.

“The ethos of Barky Malarky is helping our four-legged friends who help us, so we want to create a fun atmosphere for everyone who comes along.”

Funds were raised for Hampshire Search and Rescue Dogs through a raffle with prizes including a hot air balloon flight, as well as entry fees to the dog show and pitch fees from stalls set up on the day.

Clair said the event, which is sponsored by GP Pets and KJ Smith Solicitors, was a huge success, although she was disappointed at being let down by a company which was meant to provide children’s entertainment including a bouncy castle.

“The weather was perfect, it wasn’t too hot and it didn’t rain, so from a dog’s perspective it was great. It was very well attended and ran smoothly. We had lots of positive vibes. It was disappointing that the company meant to provide the kids’ entertainment let us down, they didn’t show up and they didn’t even tell us they weren’t coming.

“But otherwise it was a fantastic day. The volunteers were amazing and we had superb support.”

Sadly, Clair has decided this is the last year she will organise the event, because of health problems and work commitments, but she is hoping to find someone else to take it over.

The 43-year-old, who runs her own dog day-care business called Wag ‘N’ Walkies, said: “I suffer with MS and it’s got to a point where I can’t do it anymore. I’m going to try really hard to find someone else because it’s an established event.”
