Residents are being given the opportunity to shape how a new development which is set to deliver more than 1,000 new homes will look.

As previously reported in the Gazette, Bloor Homes has applied to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to build 1,100 on the site of Basingstoke Golf Club.

The application also outlines building community and sport facilities, a play area, green spaces and allotments.

Now, a public consultation is set to be held to allow residents to shape the Basingstoke Golf Course Brief Supplementary Planning Document (SPD.)

This document will give people the chance to put forward their views on what is needed, including the type and size of homes, community facilities, transport, access, environmental quality, design and layout, before a decision is taken on the final document.

When the final document is adopted, it will be used to help determine planning applications on the site, including the current proposal by Bloor Homes and Basingstoke Golf Club to develop the Winchester Road site with up to 1,100 homes and community amenities.

Cabinet member for planning, infrastructure and natural environment at the borough council, Cllr Mark Ruffell, said: “The council is keen to get people’s views on what they want to see on the proposed redevelopment, and I encourage everyone to respond to this consultation.

“It is important to gather local opinions in order to get the best possible outcome for this development.”

The scheme had previously been criticised by ward councillors, fearing it is being rushed through.

Much of this criticism has come from concerns over traffic and the fact a SPD had not been agreed ahead of the formal application being submitted.

The public consultation is open until August 5, with the final document expected to be adopted in October this year.

Once the SPD is agreed, a decision on the outline planning application is expected to be made at a later date.
