PRAYERS of celebration were held at St Bede’s Catholic Primary School to mark its 50th anniversary.

Headteacher Jamie Carroll welcomed mayor of Basingstoke and Deane, Councillor Diane Taylor along with Basingstoke MP, Maria Miller, to join the school in its celebration on Friday last week.

After the dignitaries were given a tour of the facility, they were welcomed into a special mass to mark half a century since the school open its doors.

Mr Carroll said: “We do not know the exact date the school opened its doors, but we know it is some time in 1969. We wanted to welcome former pupils and staff to mark this special occasion.”

The mass was led by Father Chris Rutledge, who was joined by former school priest Father Vincent Turney, who helped with the building of St Bede’s Church.
