A DAUGHTER has set herself the task of continuing her mother’s fundraising legacy as a thank you for her support and to 'make her proud.'

Jasmine Wills is completing the charity challenges that her mum Michelle Wills had signed up to before she died.

After struggling with depression and her wider mental health, Michelle died on April 3 this year at the age of 47.

Before her death, she had signed up to take part in the Jubilee River Swim and the Thames Marathon Swim.

Now, 19-year-old Jasmine is ready to step into her mother’s shoes in a bid to raise funds for mental health charity MIND.

“Me and mum have always been so close and she has always been supportive of me in every way,” Jasmine told the Gazette.

Jasmine, a swimming teacher, has had her own struggles with mental health after she was diagnosed with anorexia at the age of 15.

In her darkest times, Michelle and Jasmine’s dad Alan would support her, with Michelle even giving up her job to look after her daughter.

After seeing Jasmine’s struggles, Michelle start fundraising for charities, having previously taken part in the Jubilee River Swim, and at one point raising £1,000 by dying her hair blue and having it cut into a Mohawk style.

Jasmine added: “When I was really struggling, mum thought that things were out of her control and was unable to help me. So she started to do the fundraising to for Leigh House Hospital where I was getting treatment.

She added: “After a period of her struggling with her own mental health she had signed up to do the two swims and it seemed to really focus her and gave her something to look forward.

“When she died it really affected me, but I felt like I needed to make her proud.”

The Winklebury resident has already completed the Jubilee River Swim, saying it was 'mentally tough' not to have her mum cheering her on.

She will take part in the Thames Marathon Swim on August 14, and has vowed to carry on fundraising after these two events.
