COUNCILLORS are set to hear the full extent of what work needs to be done to deliver a new ice rink in Basingstoke.

As previously reported in the Gazette, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council has put forward five potential sites to house a temporary ice rink while work on redeveloping the Leisure Park is taking place.

Tonight (Wednesday), a report is due to be put before councillors which laid out the findings of a survey undertaken to give a clear indication of how much work needs to be done on the current Planet Ice facility.

The report is to be presented to a Community, Environment and Partnerships Committee meeting.

In the report, as well as laying out the potential sites for a temporary rink - which are War Memorial Park, Down Grange, Viables Industrial Estate, Thornycroft Roundabout opposite Milestones Museum and Brighton Hill Playing Fields – councillors are invited to give their views on these proposed sites.

Ahead of the meeting, cabinet member for regeneration and property, Councillor John Izett said: “Officers have been working with Planet Ice to support them in providing a temporary ice rink if we can and a number of council-owned sites have been identified as potentially having the right amount of space indicated by Planet Ice.”

Some ward councillors have already shown their support for some of the proposed sites which feature in their patches.

Brookvale and Kings Furlong Councillors Michael Westbrook and Jack Cousens said in a statement: “As passionate sports fans, we want to do everything within our power to keep ice in Basingstoke.

“Although the site in Brookvale is ranked the third best option, we would be more than happy for Brookvale to host the Bison.”
