THIS week’s Flashback Thursday transports you back to 1960.

It was known as the start of the Swinging Sixties and is associated with the birth of British pop music and fashion.

In 1960, the World’s population was just over three billion.

Notable events that happened this year.

• The Queen gives birth to her third child, Prince Andrew.

• The Hammer and Tongs Pub opens in Basingstoke

• The Beatles make their first appearance under this name. The band at this time comprised of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Stu Sutcliffe and Pete Best.

• Granada Television launch their twice weekly soap Coronation Street.

• Plastic Surgeon Sir Harold Gillies dies aged 78. During the First World War, he worked at the Park Prewett Military Hospital.
