A HOST of classic and vintage cars were on display at War Memorial Park on Sunday.

The 28th annual Festival of Transport featured nearly 1,000 vehicles on display at the park including pre-war, vintage and classic motors.

As well as the cars, there was a range of commercial vehicles, fire engines and military trucks for some 20,000 visitors to look at.

This year was the first year that the Rotary Club of Basingstoke Deane had taken on hosting duties, working with the Thornycroft Society which had been solely behind the wheel of the event.

Initially the two associations will work together to manage the annual show with the aim of handing over control to Basingstoke Deane Rotary.

The event was also run in partnership with Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.

President of Basingstoke Deane Rotary Julian Ricketts said: “The Basingstoke Festival of Transport has now become one of the largest shows of its kind in the south of England and probably one of the largest one day event of its kind in the country.

“The club were delighted to carrying on the excellent work and high standards set by the Thornycroft Society.”

Trophies were awarded for the Best Commercial Vehicle in the Show, a 1978 Bedford TK, and the Mayor’s Choice - Best in Show, a 1936 Larchester LA10.

Meanwhile, youngsters enjoyed a new addition this year, the The Funky Playbus - a double-decker bus converted into a play area.
