OBJECTIONS have been raised over an application to redevelop a shop in South Ham.

There is currently a bid for the former site of Lincolns Hardware shop, in Buckland Avenue, to change the use of the building from a shop to a fish and chips, and kebab takeaway site.

The planning application from Andrew Thomas has been submitted to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, and with a number of objections being made.

The main objection raised by residents is the provision of similar shops already exists in the area - there are currently three other outlets providing food to takeaway.

One nearby resident, John Champion, wrote: “You have taken the idea of adding yet another fast food takeaway to an area already subjected to the constant smells of cooking, the permanent noise of the Indian restaurant’s loud extractor fan often till after midnight every night.

“The competition for parking every night where the verges are gradually being destroyed by people parking on them while they get their food.

“And the danger concomitant with such an increase in traffic in an area designed for and resided in by the elderly.”

However, there have also been those in favour of the application.

Buckland Parade resident Robert Ronaldson wrote in a comment on the application: “It is my understanding that the applicant is going to spend a lot of money cleaning up and refurbishing the shop front and side area which can only enhance the appearance and bring value to the local area.

“The conversion of this shop to an updated fish and chip shop would be greatly welcomed by myself and having spoken to others in the parade welcome by them as there is not a decent fish and chip shop within five miles of the parade.”
