ANVIL Arts’ smaller space The Forge sees composer and musician Andrew Poppy present Hoarse Songs on Friday, 26 April in a show suitable for ages 16 and over.

Poppy has a remarkable body of work as a composer; in the 1980s he made albums of his own music for Trevor Horn and Paul Morley’s ZTT Records, and to this day continues to make projects which evade classification, including his most recent work, Hoarse Songs.

He constantly explores different musical contexts, and describes Hoarse Songs as a cosmic opera in 10 sonic scenes – live playback mix of the new album and a screening of 10 commissioned video works.

With the wind in her sails from receiving consecutive Americana Music Association UK Award nominations (in 2017 for UK Album of the Year and in 2018 UK Artist of the Year), singer-songwriter Danni Nicholls has been enjoying an incredible ride. See her in The Forge on Saturday, 27 April.

Danni’s vibrant, spell-binding performances are guaranteed to melt your heart into the soles of your boots. Her passionate delivery, captivating velvet voice and charmingly engaging between-song banter compel you to fall under her spell.

Combining comedy, storytelling and original songs, Katie tells the story of how, aged sixteen, still in school and hopelessly in love, she is about to learn what it means to stand up for yourself. The show is suitable for ages 12 and over.

On Wednesday, 8 May, enjoy New Worlds: Visions of a Traveller - a concert that follows the journey of two travellers, from two very different epochs of history; DH Lawrence in Mexico and Ibn Battuta in Medieval Africa.

Weaving the narrative of these two travellers with multimedia visuals, the concert is a meeting of worlds. It is a journey through time from the Pre-Columbian music of South America to the medieval Malian Royal Court music of the griots and the kora.

World-renowned composer Tunde Jegede and celebrated Mexican multi-instrumentalist Rafael Guel combine to find a new, common musical language.
