THIS week I feature another collection of photographs and news from 50 years ago in 1969.
This was the year that the new Basingstoke town centre continued to expand.
Well-established names such as Boots and WH Smiths moved from their Top of The Town locations into the new centre.
Also in this year:
• Tony Blackburn was the presenter of the Radio 1 Breakfast show
• The Beatles performed together for the final time, on the rooftop of Apple Records. The impromptu concert was broken up by the police
• The Raleigh Chopper wheelie bike for children was launched.
• American film actress and singer Judy Garland died.
• Lulu the elephant ran amok on the BBC children’s show Blue Peter.
