COUNCILLORS have called for more scrutiny on the decision to reduce a town centre bus service.

At a full council meeting on Thursday last week, Labour councillors have called the decision to reduce the shuttle bus service from the Leisure Park as “short sighted.”

South Ham ward councillor, Cllr Gary Watts, put forward a motion at full council to review the date put forward which led to the reduction in the service which links the Leisure Park with the town centre, railway station and Basing View.

The changes, which came into place on March 4, means the buses run from 7am to 7.32pm Monday to Friday, 9.40am to 6.18pm on Saturday and with no Sunday service.

Cllr Watts said: “The decision was taken on selective data which cannot justify the decision.

“Over the Christmas period is when this service is used the most, so what is going to happen next Christmas when residents do not have a park and ride service on a Sunday, it will mean more cars in the town centre and more congestion.”
