A COUNTRY road will have to be closed to allow for repairs to a “giant” pothole.

The road defect near Middle Wyke, St Mary Bourne, was reported to Hampshire Highways more than three weeks ago by keen cyclist Martyn Kimberley.

In a post on Twitter, Mr Kimberley demonstrated the extent of the damage to the road caused by the pothole by placing his bicycle in the hole.

Mr Kimberley said that the pothole, on the country lane which runs between Finkley Road and Walworth Road is a “major danger to road users.”

A spokesperson for Hampshire County Council said: “We are aware of this road defect, and can confirm that Highways teams will be making this safe as soon as possible.

"A permanent repair is scheduled to take place during April. In order to complete the full repair, the road will need to be closed and this closure will be advertised in advance to residents.”
