THE fate of a school's bid to build two new blocks will be decided next week.

Sherfield School's proposal to construct a science block and a performing arts building has been recommended for approval by Basingstoke and Deane planning chiefs ahead of a meeting on Wednesday.

The planning application also covers demolishing the existing science buildings at the site and providing an extension to the current dining hall at the school.

If given the go-ahead, the Sherfield-on-Loddon-based school's capacity would increase from 628 pupils to around 700, and staff numbers would increase from 100 to approximately 110.

The application is to be decided by councillors after ward member, Cllr Venetia Rowland, raised concerns.

In a report for the meeting, Cllr Rowland notes: "Whilst I would welcome the enhancements to the facilities for learning at the school, I am concerned that the school has adopted the strategy of putting planning applications piecemeal so the implications of the cumulative effects of the various planning applications that have been submitted are not considered.

"Already there are significant near misses at the exit of the school and the creation of tail backs on the A33 during drop off and pick times."

Sherfield-on-Loddon Parish Council has also objected to the application, citing fears of over-development of the site and an increase in traffic on the A33.

However, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council planning officers have concluded councillors should approve the application, with no planning reason not to found.

Officers added the proposal does not adversely impact upon Buckfield House, the Grade II-listed feature which is the main building of the school site.

The Development Control Committee meeting at which a decision will be made on the proposal will be held from 6.30pm at the Civic Offices, in London Road, and is open to the public to attend.
