A MAN has been jailed for 18 weeks following a number of assaults and repeatedly damaging police vans.

Ian Christopher George, 49, of no fixed abode appeared at Basingstoke Magistrates Court on March 21 charged with a litany of offences.

The court heard that on March 5, George assaulted two people in Basingstoke and once apprehended by officers he reacted in a way which caused damage to a police van.

The 49-year-old also stole a bottle of wine from Morrisons, in Worting Road, on the same date.

In a separate incident, George pleaded guilty to stealing three shirts to the value of £135 from Debenhams in Festival Place on March 10.

A week later on March 17 George also caused damage to a door of Mary Rose Court, to the value of £400, and assaulted a detention officer by beating on March 17. On the same day, he again damaged a police van as well as a custody cell.

On March 4 of this year he had again damaged a police van.

George pleaded guilty to all the charges put before him.

Magistrates sentenced George to 18 weeks in jail overall with the assault on the emergency services officer given the most lengthy sentence with all others running concurrently.
