WHEELBARROWS and wellingtons were out in force when much-anticipated new allotments were officially opened at Beggarwood Park.

A further 20 additional plots of land have been cultivated at the existing allotment site in Beggarwood Lane.

The new sites were funded by £102,000 from the Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s capital programme in response to demand for allotment space in the borough.

Preparation of the area included scrub clearance work, new hedge planting, fencing, pathways, compost bins and a new access route.

Gardeners of all ages joined cabinet member for planning and infrastructure at the borough council, Councillor Mark Ruffell, at the opening ceremony.

Cllr Ruffell said: “It’s a pleasure to officially open the new allotments at Beggarwood – there has been huge demand and I know that the new allotment holders will get much satisfaction from cultivating their own plot of land, as well as a good crop of fruit or vegetables.

“The council is pleased to support this project which has enhanced the current allotment site and ensures residents continue to enjoy a high quality of life here.

“Gardening is a great way of exercising and staying healthy, making friends and getting involved in your community.”

Basingstoke Allotment and Leisure Gardeners’ Association (BALGA) supported the project and will be planning a special celebration later this year when the first batch of crops are ready for harvesting.

Allotments can help to protect the environment as they can be a habitat for wildlife such as birds, insects and small animals, and the use of practices including composting and rainwater harvesting are encouraged.
