IMMERSE yourself in an atmospheric Indian soundscape as sarod star Soumik Datta and the City of London Sinfonia perform a double bill of music for film at The Anvil on Thursday, 14 March.

Oscar-winning director Satyajit Ray’s cult and off-beat film King of Ghosts will be projected on a large screen with a live cinematic score.

The film follows the magical journey of incompetent musician friends Goopy and Bagha, who are granted three wishes by the benevolent yet terrifying King of Ghosts. It will take you on a breathtaking and magical journey across rural India - a vintage superhero film at its best.

Around India with a Movie Camera presents some of the earliest surviving film from India, as well as enchanting travelogues, intimate home movies and newsreels from British, French and Indian filmmakers, drawn exclusively from the BFI National Archive’s early film collection.

Taking in maharajas and viceroys, fakirs and farmhands, as well as personalities such as Sabu and Gandhi, this is a magical compilation by award-winning filmmaker Sandhya Suri.

Soumik Datta again provides a live soundtrack with percussionist Cormac Byrne and Bill Barclay on piano.

The following week, on Wednesday, 20 March, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment performs a stirring concert of works from the Romantic era with pianist and conductor Sir András Schiff.

The evening will begin with Schumann’s Konzertstück for four horns. Its three movements showcase the character of the instrument, with heroic drama in the first, a singing slow movement, and an exuberant finale sure to bring the house down.

This is followed by his fourth symphony no 4 which contains some of his most inspired music in any form.

And finally Brahms’ titanic Piano Concerto no 1. Its stormy first movement is followed by a rich slow movement of quiet beauty. The finale is a defiant rondo of great energy which eventually turns to the major mode for a triumphant close.
