ST MARY'S CE School picked up the Junior School award for the fourth year running and Bishop Challoner Catholic Secondary School won the Secondary School award for the third year running.

St Mary’s had a hugely successful 2018 as it finished top of the Basingstoke Schools Medals Table with 29 medals, which included 14 golds.

The school qualified for county finals in football, individual and team table tennis, indoor athletics, cross country, girls and boys cricket and were crowned county champions in individual table tennis and girls cricket.

Caroline Welch headteacher of St Mary’s said: "It is great to win the award again, but like all the schools against us we are looking to make every one enjoy sport. It is great to see a lot of current and former pupils here tonight."

Bishop Challoner had an array of success last year.

In athletics the boys came third and girls second in the Basingstoke Schools Athletics contest and 14 Year 7/8 girls and boys represented Basingstoke in Hampshire Schools.

Table tennis saw under-13 and under-17 boys win Basingstoke Schools and represent Basingstoke at the Hampshire Cup. The rugby boys won the county cup and the under-15s qualified to the County Cup.

The under-13s won the Basingstoke Schools Cricket Cup and the Year 11 A netball team remained undefeated.

PE teacher Fiona Hutchings, who joined the school in January this year picked up the award and said: “I really pleased for the school to have won this award and all the four PE teachers work really hard and we hope we give the opportunity for all to enjoy sport at the school."
