COMMUTERS to the nation’s capital from Basingstoke will be facing delays today as strike action means that trains are limited.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union (RMT) have declared a 24-hour strike on South Western Railway (SWR) services today.

This has meant that services from Basingstoke to London Waterloo have been severely affected, with only one train an hour going in each direction.

The strikes are in regard to the role of guards on trains.

In a statement, SWR said: “The RMT continues to play politics with their ongoing strike action, causing misery at a time when people just want to be with friends and family or get to work.

“If the union really cares about passengers it should call off these strikes and start helping to build a better railway.

“We have guaranteed to roster a guard on every train - we are employing more, not fewer guards.

“We will do everything we can to keep customers moving and reduce disruption whenever the RMT strikes.”

A reduced service will be in operation throughout the south of England today. For more information and for a list of the services running, visit the SWR website.
