A WOMAN is in a 'life-threatening condition' following a flat fire in Bell Road this morning.

The 50-year-old has been taken to Salisbury District Hospital with serious burn injuries, according to police, after a fire broke out at a ground floor flat and destroyed the home.

Firefighters were called at 2.22am and the building was evacuated.

The other seven flats were affected by smoke, and two other people were taken to hospital in Swindon to be treated for smoke inhalation.  

Residents were taken to a nearby hotel while crews from Andover, Whitchurch, Sutton Scotney, Eastleigh and from Dorset and Wiltshire fire service tackled the blaze.

The fire crews brought the incident under control at around 4am.

Residents are staying in alternative accommodation for the time being, according to the Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.

A police spokesperson said officers were called at 2.33am and are investigating the circumstances of the incident. 

Police were present at the scene this morning as well as Sovereign Housing representatives.
