A VILLAGE in Basingstoke and Deane could see up to 90 new homes being built within its boundaries.

An application has been submitted to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to construct up to 90 new homes on land off Goddards Lane, Sherfield-on-Loddon.

The application from Gladman Developments Ltd reads: “The site provides an excellent opportunity for a development which integrates well with the existing residential context of Sherfield-on-Loddon.

“The site has no overriding environmental or physical constraints and provides the opportunity to establish a sustainable development which is both physically and visually well contained.”

This is not the first time that Gladman Developments have tried to gain permission to build on the land, having previously withdrawn an application to build 95 homes in May 2017.

As previously reported in The Gazette, the previous application was withdrawn due to the Sherfield Neighbourhood Plan, which protects the village from certain planning applications.

The original application was met with frustration by villagers and councillors, who said the development would be “inappropriate” for the area.

In the design and access statement, it read: “Using local townscape characteristics of block form and street layout; plot arrangement and materials will assist in creating a development that will positively respond to its immediate context.

“However, the style of architecture and methods of construction should be current and in keeping with sustainable design objectives.”

The statement added: “The development provides a total of 6.7 hectares for residential development, providing up to 90 dwellings.

“The development will provide for a broad mix of dwellings and house types, ranging from one-five-bedroom units, offering a mix of market housing from first time homes to larger family homes.”

As well as the new homes, the development will incorporate open spaces and play areas and spaces for ‘kick abouts’.

Access to the site will be constructed at the junction of Bow Drive to “maximise” connectivity to the rest of the village.
