A KEEN blogger has been recruited to be an in-house journalist for the Football Association (FA).

Dom Smith, a second year student at Queen Mary’s College and a keen football blogger, has been recruited as a young journalist at the FA.

Last month, the 18-year-old was at Wembley to cover the England friendly with the United States of America and to interview man-of-the-match Trent Alexander-Arnold, the 20-year-old Liverpool and England right back, who shares a birthday with Dom.

In 2012, Dom was asked by the FA to write a piece for its website and the organisation has followed his progress ever since.

Now that he has turned 18, he has been invited to join the ranks of the FA’s pool of young journalists, to write the official match reports for FA Cup fixtures from this season.

Dom said: “I’m delighted with how fast things have taken off – and of course with England’s recent change in fortunes. I really believe the England team has a bright future and I hope to play a role in telling that story.”

Dom is applying to study philosophy, politics and economics at university, after which time he is hoping to pursue a career in journalism.

In addition to his A-levels, he is working on an Extended Project Qualification into the long-term costs of hosting the football World Cup.

Dom’s website, www.englandfootball.org, features all of his match reports from the last six years, as well as various articles reviewing the progress of England’s youth, senior and women’s teams and casting a nostalgic eye over some noteworthy historic fixtures.

Dom has been a regular contributor to the England supporters’ podcast, TheThreeLionsPodcast.

His first direct contact with the senior England football team came at the end of this summer, following their success at the World Cup in Russia. England captain Harry Kane won the Golden Boot at the tournament and when interviewed for the FA’s Lions’ Den Youtube channel, the striker offered his boots as a contest prize - Dom was the lucky winner.
