FOR the last couple of years Everest Community Academy has offered the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Bronze in Year 9 and Silver in Year 10 or 11.
There are four parts to successfully complete for the Silver Award: physical, volunteering, skill and the expedition (of three days and two nights).
Before going on our practice expedition to the Surrey Hills for three days, we learnt about navigation, map reading and compass skills. During the expedition we had to carry our own kit and complete seven hours of planned activity everyday which included a three-and-a-half hour journey and nature photography.
It was extremely tiring but fun, unfortunately getting lost once meant walking an extra hour back to the campsite. We will be completing the assessed expedition in April 2019.
Currently the Year 9s have started their Bronze Award where they will do the same sectors for a shorter amount of time.
The Duke of Edinburgh award is a great experience, it builds confidence, encourages both team work and self sufficiency.
