A MEMORIAL plaque dedicated to the men of Charlton who gave their lives in the two world wars has been unveiled.

The Reverend Alex Randle-Bissell, the priest-in-charge of the Pastrow Benefice, revealed the plaque on Sunday during a Remembrance Service held at St Thomas’ Church.

The memorial honours the fallen from the village from The Great War and the Second World War as Charlton has previously not had its own war memorial.

Councillor Clive Ward said: “The service was very well attended by all age groups and we were reminded how important it was for us to remember not just those servicemen who died but also the many military and civilians who were and are affected by past wars; so that conflicts can be avoided in future.”

The plaque was commissioned by Charlton Parish Council to mark 100 years after the end of The Great War and will eventually be fixed to one of the buttresses.

Advertiser columnist Craig Fisher undertook the research to reveal the names of Charlton service personnel who had died during both world wars.
