A SOUTHAMPTON councillor is celebrating victory after a short campaign.

Cllr Steven Galton set up a petition calling for Southampton City Council to ban drivers from turning right out of the service road on Millbrook Road West.

And after less than 24 hours the council took on the decision.

Now motorists will not be able to turn right out of the road while a multimillion roadworks programme takes place at Millbrook roundabout. As reported the roadworks have been causing traffic chaos - with jams building up towards the M271 at key times during the day.

Cllr Galton launched his campaign on Tuesday night after seeing cars go up the service road on the right hand side to avoid getting stuck in traffic.

He said: "I'm very happy they have done it. I only launched the petition last night.

"This was an issue before the Millbrook roundabout work started. "This is an issue at the best of times and as you can see from the photo cars are regularly driving on the wrong side of the road to make a left turn at the end. This is leading to near misses and almost head on collisions.

"I thought I have got to do something before there's a serious accident. It would shut off the whole dual carriageway into town. I'm not one of those councillors that petitions everything because I don't want to waste people's time. But it shows it isn't just one person."

Cllr Galton's petition accrued 66 petitions in less than 24 hours.

Southampton City Council's Highways team told drivers about the change on social media this afternoon and said: "Millbrook Road West service road right turn into Regent Park Road is being temporarily banned to improve traffic flow on Regents Park Road, during this phase of the Millbrook Roundabout works."
