A CONTENTIOUS plan to allow for a car washing facility in the car park of a supermarket is to go before councillors.

An application has been submitted to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to install a canopy and portable building within the car park of the Morrisions in Worting Road.

The proposal would see the new car wash placed towards the rear of the supermarket, close to King George V Playing Fields.

A decision is due to be made at a development control committee meeting on November 7.

The plan had previously been submitted and then withdrawn due to objections regarding noise complaints and not being “suitable”.

But the plan has been resubmitted earlier this year, with Brookvale and King’s Furlong ward councillor Michael Westbrook, saying none of the concerns have been addressed.

Cllr Westbrook said that the proposed location is too close to the residential properties and would lead to noise complaints.

The ward councillor added: “Morrisons car park is substantial and the majority of the parking areas are far away from residential properties and set well within the industrial part of the site.

“An alternative location may prove to be more acceptable in planning terms and preferable for a number of reasons already mentioned.”

In a planning statement, CHQ Architects said that the installation of the car wash would provide an additional service to the supermarket’s customers.
