THE man in charge of the national Sea Cadet movement has declared himself impressed with the work of the Basingstoke branch.

Basingstoke Sea Cadets were visited by the Captain of the Sea Cadets, Captain Phil Russell RN.

Captain Phil Russell RN said: “I had an incredible time with the cadets, their instructors and support staff.

"As well as joining in with the usual evening activities, I helped to enrol ten new entrants and was asked to present three very special Sea Cadet awards: Aviation Gold Wings, Master Coxswain and Commodore’s Broad Pennant.

"For a small unit, achieving these awards is truly remarkable and Basingstoke is definitely punching above its weight.”

A number of Basingstoke's Sea Cadets were among a select group in the country to receive the awards.

Darren Rust, officer-in-charge said: “We are very proud of what has been achieved this year.

"Not only have our cadets been able to gain valuable qualifications, they have enjoyed activities such as sailing, rowing, powerboating, first aid, campcraft, rock climbing and first aid.

"I would encourage other young people in Basingstoke to join Sea Cadets as it gives them a chance to make new friends whilst having lots of fun.”
