THE 100th birthday of a Women’s Institute has been celebrated with the borough's first citizen.
Oakley & Deane Women’s Institute celebrated its centenary this year and one of the events to mark this milestone was a visit to the Mayor's Parlour for tea with Councillor Sean Keating.
Cllr Keating regaled members with stories of his childhood and his journey from Ireland to Basingstoke.
Shirley Goodwin, branch president, said: "This pleasurable afternoon also included a visit to the council chambers where the mayor explained to the ladies something about the workings of the council and the meetings held there. The afternoon ended with a group photograph taken outside the council offices.
"Oakley & Deane WI would like to thank the Mayor and his staff, especially Zoe, for the wonderful welcome, delicious tea and informative talk." Oakley & Deane WI meets every month at Oakley Village Hall.
It is open to all women, and visitors are welcome at any of the meetings.
