PUPILS have been signalling the way to better road safety at their school.

Hatch Warren Infant and Hatch Warren Junior Schools unveiled earlier this month a set of six signs to spread road safety advice to both pupils and adults alike.

Thanks to a grant from Councillor Stephen Reid, from his Hampshire County Council councillor’s fund, the two schools designed and purchased the signs, each of which is daubed with a message which the children themselves came up with.

The messages highlight good road safety practice for pupils such as looking before crossing roads but also advice to parents on safe driving near schools when picking up or collecting their children.

Michelle Moore, headteacher at the infants school, said: “The signs are deliberately kiddie-cut-out size as we wanted people to stop and think rather than using a standard circular road sign. This means they can also be moved around to any problem areas.

“By getting the children involved, they really own the process. They talk to their parents about it and that gets them involved too.”

The signs also came out of the schools’ commitment to the ModeShift campaign which aims to promote alternatives to using a car to get to and from school.
