A GYMNASTICS display team is set to show off its skills at one of the world’s most famous theme parks.

The Basingstoke Display Squad, which trains at the Basingstoke Gymnastics Club, is competing in France in the Gymnastique Magique competition.

While squad members are in France, they will also be one of the several gymnastic clubs taking part in a Disneyland parade, having passed the audition to take part in the Aladdin-themed event.

It will be the squad’s first opportunity to compete abroad - already this year the group has taken part at Gymfusion in London, as well as at Gymeisteddfod in Cardiff.

The group has also tasted success this year, being given a bronze award in the Great British Gym for Life Challenge in Nottingham.

Display squads perform gymnastics, including tumbling and dancing, set to music and quite often with a theme. Basingstoke Display Squad is made up of 16 girls, ranging in age from eight to 16-years-old.

Justine Woods, mother of Emily Woods, one of the gymnasts competing, said: “The opportunity is amazing for them, and it will be great to show people just exactly what display is.

“Display is different to other types of gymnastics which people don’t always see.

“In the run up to this, the girls have been fundraising by packing bags at local supermarkets, and have been surprised at how people don’t seem to know about it.

“They are all excited and are counting down the days.”

The team will be leaving for France next week as it will be competing in the Gymnastique Magique on Saturday, 13 October and performing in Disneyland the next.

While the group is going soon, it is still fundraising for the last few elements of the trip, including items like costumes to perform in during the parade in Paris.
