AN ARTISTIC space in Basingstoke which has always championed the work of remarkable woman is making the fairer sex the focus of its new season.

Whether it be Bette Davis or Basingstoke and Deane’s very own Jane Austen, the Proteus Creation Space, in Council Road has always celebrated the work of woman in the arts.

For its new autumn season, the venue will go down this path again featuring shows ranging from contemporary circus in the shape of Ellie Dubois’ all-female No Show, the experience of transgender women in the poignant comedy Hayley and Me and Proteus’ own new show I’m Super, Thanks, a satirical comedy looking at the ups and downs of life married to a superhero.

The season gets underway on October 4, with a performance of I’m Super, Thanks, a brand-new solo satire from the critically-acclaimed director of Becoming Hattie.

Proteus’ artistic director and chief executive officer, Mary Swan, who wrote and stars in the play, said: “I’m Super, Thanks is in fact the first in a trilogy of feminist pieces Proteus is producing over the next few years; we have always made work with a feminist perspective and our ‘Superwomen’ season showcases a diversity of those perspectives and experiences.

“Now more than ever, in the #MeToo and #TimesUp era, continuing the conversation around the rights and experiences of all women is vital to everyone.”

At the start of November, an innovative collaboration between The Proteans, Basingstoke Youth Theatre and Proteus Young Company, titled Come With Me If You Want To Live will come to life, then a few days removed from Transgender Awareness Week Proteus will welcome transgender performer, activist, theatre and cabaret maker Kate O’Donnell for her new solo show Hayley and Me.

As the festive season approaches, the annual in-house Christmas show The Magical Christmas Toy Shop opens on December 14. Once again, Scratch Built Productions in association with Proteus bring their trademark mix of interactive storytelling, puppetry, music and sensory elements to this show, transforming the Creation Space into an immersive walkthrough adventure.
