A TOWN centre pub is celebrating yet another year of recognition in an influential guide.

The Campaign for Real Ale’s Good Beer Guide 2019 published a list of all its recommended pubs to visit last Thursday with several Andover and village pubs making the cut.

The Town Mills, in Bridge Street, is giving a special thanks to one of its managers, Ian Bennie, for his work looking after the ales to earn its place in the guide.

Owner Peter Richards said: “I need to take him out for a nice meal.

“He basically took it upon himself a number of years ago to put systems in place, and we get lots of people coming in now just to try ales.

“It is great to see an independent can compete in today’s market where we are surrounded by chain pubs and cut price supermarkets.”

To get in the guide, listing 4,500 of the best real ale pubs, CAMRA members went to the historic mill as unannounced mystery beer tasters, sampling the ales and judging them before Pete later received a phone call to confirm the pub’s recognition in the ‘beer bible’ for a fourth year.

Ian, who worked at a factory as an engineer before joining the pub in 2010, said his favourite ale is 6X.

He said: “I have been drinking beer for a very long time. I was almost brought up on 6X when I was younger.

“But they are all good. I would recommend them all to people.”

Other pubs recognised for their brews include the Angel Inn, in High Street, as well as the Eagle Inn in Abbots Ann, Clatford Arms in Goodworth Clatford and Weyhill Fair, in Weyhill Road which is currently closed and looking for a new landlord.
