POPLEY was full of the sounds of thousands of miles away when the Basingstoke Caribbean Society and Friends celebrated its heritage on Saturday.
The group invited the community to take part in an event at Popley Fields Community Centre which was a celebration of Caribbean culture, Black History Month and marked 70 years since the Windrush immigrants arrived in the UK.
There was Caribbean food, including jerk chicken, and live music, provided by Soul in 2U, The Caribbean Serenaders and DJ Gregory.
The event was also attended by deputy mayor of Basingstoke and Deane Councillor Diane Taylor and the deputy mayor’s consort.
As well as that, there were also several members of the community present who came to the country as a part of the Windrush generation and settled in Basingstoke.
They told the crowd about their life before moving to the UK.
