A PUB landlord is set to trek across battlefields to help raise funds and awareness of the work of a charity which helps veterans and their families.

Kevin Divall, one of the landlords at The Rising Sun, in Chapel Hill, will be taking part in the British Legion Western Front trek through the French and Belgium Battlefields of First World War.

The trek, which will begin on September 17, will involve the 56-year-old and his niece Gemma Divall walking the Somme and Ypres, tracing parts of the Western Front.

“When we set off we will be walking 13 miles each day over the four days,” Mr Divall told The Gazette.

“It may not sound like a lot, but it is going to be a real test and I have been going on longer walks each day with the dogs in preparation.”

Mr Divall decided to take part in the trek after learning more about what the Royal British Legion do for service personnel and their families.

With both his father and brother having served in the army, the landlord has seen how the charity has supported his family and now wants to spread the word.

He added: “The British Legion do a lot more than what people see on the surface. That is why I want to do this trek to make more people aware of the incredible work that they do.”

As well as raising awareness of the charity, Mr Divall has got his pub community involved, holding sweepstakes and fund raisers at the Rising Sun to help towards his £1,400 target.

While The Gazette was sat with the 56-year-old one customer came up to him and handed him a £20 note.

“That seems to be happening a lot, which is really humbling,” added Mr Divall.

“We’ve got a bit of a sweepstake going on as well to how many steps I complete it in with the most outrageous guess being quarter of a million.”
