VINTAGE fairground vehicles are set to steam into Basingstoke.

On Saturday at 10am, residents will have the opportunity to see a collection of restored vintage fairground vehicles take to the streets as part of Carter’s Steam Fair’s heritage Road Run event which launches their weekend vintage steam fair event at War Memorial park.

For more than 40 years, the Berkshire-based Carters family have been rescuing heritage fairground vehicles from all over the country and restoring them at their yard, repainting them in a traditional fairground style.

Throughout the summer months they take their vintage fair on tour around the south east of England and having just completed a run at Carfest South, they are now coming to Basingstoke.

Fairground owner Joby Carter said: “The road run gives us a chance to showcase these vintage attractions so the public can all enjoy them too.”

The collection of vehicles include a steam-powered Traction Engine, a rare ‘Showtrac Scammel’, and some Vintage ERF and Atkinsons lorries.

The vintage vehicle parade starts from War Memorial Park at 10am and lasts for about 45 minutes as the vehicles tour around town.

The vehicles then stop next to the fairground site at War Memorial Park to refill with water, coal and diesel ready for the weekend’s fairground rides.

Georgina Carter added: “The Road Run is perfect for little lorry lovers. Seeing these iconic heritage vehicles go past is great fun for all the family. We enjoy waving at the kids as we go past and love watching their reactions, especially if we sound the horn!”

The steam fair is open on Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 10pm. Entrance to the fair is free.
