A MOTHER at the centre of a fundraising campaign got to enjoy some fun in the sun before heading off for cancer treatment.

A fun day was held at Tadley Calleva Football Club on Saturday in aid of the Hope for Gemma campaign with funds raised expected to be in the region of £5,000.

Gemma Kent, from Tadley, attended the event before flying out to Turkey to begin life-extending treatment for her liver and pancreatic cancer, treatment which got underway on Monday.

The family of the mother-of-three needs to raise £60,000 to pay for the treatment, which takes up to six months, and to cover getting to and staying in Turkey.

The day was organised by her brother Alan Elderfield and friend Hayley Bone.

Alan said: “We had a good turnout on the day. Tadley has been amazing in supporting us - everyone has been amazing. We have been overwhelmed by all the support from people.”

The Hope for Gemma campaign, named in honour of Gemma’s daughter Hope who was conceived through IVF, smashed the £45,000 barrier this week.

Upcoming events for Hope for Gemma include Pelifest on Saturday, 11 August at The Pelican, in Silchester Road, Pamber Heath, which starts at noon.
