THE head of Hampshire Cultural Trust will step down from her role later this year, just months after a row over job losses at the charity.

The organisation has confirmed that operations chief Paul Sapwell, will take over as chief executive officer with effect from November.

It comes after Dr Janet Owen confirmed she will be stepping down at the end of October.

According to a statement issued by the trust, Dr Owen made the decision “in order to pursue her long-standing interest in cultural heritage”.

She has been leading the charity since its inception in 2014.

The news comes after a difficult start to the year for the trust, which runs the Willis Museum and Milestones Museum, when job losses were announced by Dr Owen.

As previously reported, experts demanded reassurances from Dr Owen that the vital artifacts under the trust’s stewardship would be protected after cuts were implemented, due to a reduction in grants.

Commenting on Mr Sapwell’s appointment, a spokesman said: “[He] has been instrumental in pushing forward the organisation’s strong visitor and commercial performance over the last two years.

“Formerly head of operations at the Youth Hostel Association, he has a track record in transforming and modernising organisations in the charity sector and is passionate about the impact that culture can have on people’s lives.”

Mr Sapwell added: “It is a huge privilege to be taking over the helm at such an exciting stage in the trust’s development as an independent charity.

“Visitor numbers at our venues across the county are already up by 14 per cent this year and we have a fantastic programme of events and exhibitions.

“Most of all, I am so proud to have the opportunity to lead such a passionate and dedicated team that is committed both to preserving and developing the outstanding culture that Hampshire has to offer and to reaching those people who are vulnerable or disadvantaged in our communities and would not normally be able to access arts and culture.”

There was also praise from chairman of trustees Alan Lovell, who said: “The board is delighted to have appointed Paul.

“Janet has been a real asset to the trust and has delivered some remarkable achievements.

“I would like to thank her for commitment over the past four years. Under Paul’s leadership, I have every confidence that HCT will continue the good work that Janet has started and will grow.”
