A CHILDREN'S play area has had to temporarily close after vandals damaged a large part of it.

Vandals have caused extensive damage to the Chineham Splash Pad in Popley.

The play area, which is run by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, will remain closed until repair work is carried out.

Cabinet member for communities and community safety Cllr Simon Bound said: “I am very disappointed and saddened to say the Chineham Splash Pad in Popley is currently closed following extensive vandalism.

“Our team is working hard to ensure the Splash Pad is repaired quickly, but the severity of the damage may take some time to repair and until this is completed the facility will remain shut.

“We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause our local families who would normally be enjoying the water park at this time of year.

“We encourage anyone who knows any information in relation to this vandalism to contact the police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Updates as to when the park will be re-opened will be posted on the borough council’s website. Visit basingstoke.gov.uk/playareas.
