RANIL Jayawardena holds his seat with 37,754 votes, with Labour the closest rival with 10,000.
Mr Jayawardena said: "This is not an election anyone wanted, but it was an election we needed - because some were seeking to frustrate Brexit.
"Locally we have a clear mandate."
He added we will wait and see what happens tonight with regards to Conservatives.
