A BASINGSTOKE builder fears someone could get killed or seriously injured if nothing is done about lorries using a petrol station during rush hour.

Kevin Cottrell said about eight Currys Knowhow lorries visit the Texaco garage in Grove Road every morning between 7.30am and 8.30am, resulting in them blocking the road up to the roundabout as they wait to access the forecourt.

The father-of-two, who lives in Oakridge, said: “They are going to get fuel but you get seven or eight of them all in one go. But because only three or four can get in at one time it blocks up the other pumps and they all stand outside having a chat. There’s no urgency. Myself and others have asked them to move their vehicles but they won’t.”

Mr Cottrell, who works in Ellisfield as a builder, believes the lorries are coming from Daneshill and said the problem has been going on for weeks.

The 43-year-old added: “It’s causing so many rows in the morning. I asked one of them to move their vehicle and people were applauding me.”

He believes the lorries could cause an accident when they are backed up on the road, adding: “They are blocking the highway. It only takes one person not to pay attention and there will be an accident.”

Mr Cottrell complained to Currys’ customer service team, and was told that his concerns would be passed on, but he said the problem has not been rectified.

He added: “Why don’t they go when it’s not so busy rather than rush hour? It’s very inconvenient. I feel that it’s going to take the police to deal with it. One of their vehicles this morning was half in and half out the road and he decided to back up through the no entry. There was an uproar. He thought he would jump the queue but the cashiers refused to serve him.”

A statement from Currys said: “Our team in Basingstoke were not aware of this problem previously and are now taking the correct action to address the problem appropriately, ensuring no further inconvenience is caused.”
