A BASINGSTOKE primary school has closed today because of a bug that has spread among children and staff.

Rucstall Primary School, in Holbein Close, informed parents yesterday by letter that the school would be shut today.

The letter, from headteacher Helen Morris and chair of governors Terry Tillman, said: "As many of you are aware we have had a substantial number of children and staff presenting flu-like symptoms over the course of this week. You all received a letter on Monday explaining the symptoms and the recommended procedure to follow.

"On Wednesday, we were seeing a steady improvement in the number of absentees, however it would seem that the 'bug' is still very much active and further children and staff are now poorly. People who had shown signs of improvement have relapsed.

"It is with this in mind that a difficult decision has been made to close the school tomorrow (Friday January 22)."

The letter added that the closure would allow those currently suffering to improve, and to prevent the spread of infection.

It went on to say: "Staffing ratios are crucial to ensure the safety of children and we are now no longer able to guarantee sufficient staffing for tomorrow. Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience this may cause but I know you will all understand the necessity to take this course of action. The well-being of the pupils and staff are a priority at Rucstall."

The school plans to re-open on Monday, although if this decision changes parents will be informed via text message and information will be posted on the school website on Sunday afternoon.
