HOSPITALITY students from BCoT (Basingstoke College of Technology) were recently commissioned by the High Sheriff of Hampshire, Lady Louisa Portal, to provide catering for her high profile charity events held across the region.

Lady Portal became the High Sheriff in April and is the Queen’s representative in Hampshire for all matters relating to the judiciary and law and order. She supports charities and groups, especially those involved in crime reduction.

BCoT students catered for six of Lady Portal’s functions, including four luncheons and two canapé receptions. Over 400 guests were served, making this the college’s largest external contract to date.

Gerald Hill, course tutor in hospitality at BCoT, said that being chosen by Lady Portal meant that students were able to develop skills in a new environment, serving guests with very high expectations.

He added: “Students were very aware that standards of food and service at Lady Portal’s events had to be exemplary. This was an opportunity for them to demonstrate culinary skills and first class customer service. They surpassed even my expectations.”

The students prepared food for respected names in Hampshire society. Lady Portal said she was “full of admiration” for them.

After a reception for magistrates, she said: “Last weekend I hosted two high profile events for Hampshire Magistrates. The students excelled themselves and I was so proud to line them up with their tutor, Mr Hill, to thank them publicly."

I noticed how the students grew in confidence as the days progressed. They clearly receive a first class training and for those who choose hospitality/catering as a career, I wish them every success – they’ve got off to an excellent start!”
