THERE was dancing in the streets in Sherfield-on-Loddon on Saturday as the village held its first folk festival.

The event, organised by The Friends of The Village Hall, was called SOLFolk and featured concerts in the hall and singing workshops in local pubs as well as Morris dancing and street entertainment.

There was plenty of food too with locally brewed beer.

The daytime event was free, while the festival was rounded off in the evening with a Grand Ceilidh with music provided by Sherfield-on-Loddon band Diatonic.

Alan Ball said: “It went very well. Everybody who went said they thought it was fantastic – there was not a bad thing said about it.” He said the event was in part held to raise funds for the upkeep of the village hall and provide a community event.

“We put together a lively event to get everyone involved, enjoying good music and generally having a good time.”

Five Morris dancing sides performed on the day, including BasingClog Morris and Hook Eagle, along with local bands and PerKelt, who hail from the Czech Republic.

Alan said: “It was our first run and we plan to do it again next year, when we hope more people will be able to attend.”
