A WOMAN has been airlifted to hospital following a car crash that has led to the closure of an M3 carriageway by Basingstoke.

Police said a red saloon car, containing two women, left the northbound carriageway near junction 6 and overturned at around 9.40am this morning.

Both carriageways were closed while an air ambulance landed on the southbound carriageway to take one of the women to hospital.

Fire and ambulance crews were also called the scene.

The northbound carriageway remains closed to traffic while recovery of the vehicle and debris takes place. Traffic is being diverted off the motorway at junction 7.

There are reports of long queues on the northbound M3 before the crash scene, and at the Black Dam roundabout.

The southbound carriageway has since reopened.
