CREATIVE students from a Basingstoke school have been impressing visitors to a town museum.

Is It Art?, produced by talented students from The Costello School, is currently on show at The Willis Museum, in Market Place.

Among those impressed with what they saw at a special viewing for invited guests was the Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane Councillor Roger Gardiner and his Mayoress wife Tricia.

Describing the exhibits as amazing, Cllr Gardiner said: “The quality of the work and the creativity on display was remarkable.

“It was a credit not only to the students, but also the high quality of teaching at The Costello School.

“To say I was impressed by the students would be an understatement. They showed real talent, excellent technique and a spark of genius. Congratulations to the students – I loved the show.”

Art teacher and head of Year 7 Jen Hopkins said there were around 53 pieces of art on show, ranging from digital photography to paintings and sculpture, including a fury piece called an iCheetah made by 14-year-old Madeleine Sly.

Miss Hopkins said: “Our Is It Art? theme was to encourage our students to think outside the box and challenge other people’s thinking.

“We had taken artwork that was displayed around the school for the exhibition. In fact, our school is like one big art gallery.

“We are immensely proud of our students and what they have achieved.”

The exhibition, which is open to the public and is free to see at The Willis Museum, will run until November 15.
