COMMUTERS face lengthy delays this evening after a man was hit by a train at Basingstoke.

Officers from British Transport Police were called to Basingstoke railway station at 1.09pm today after a report that a man had been hit by a train.

The man was declared dead at the scene.

A spokesman for the force said the incident is being treated at non-suspicious and that officers were now working to identify the person and inform his family.

A file will be prepared for the coroner.

Rail firm Network Rail said on its website at 1.30pm today that a person was hit by a train at Basingstoke and that the station had closed as a result.

It added that services running between Southampton Central and Woking may be diverted via Havant and Guildford, and that all services were being delayed by 90 minutes.

It is understood the station has since opened to passengers.

Rail operator South West Trains said on its Twitter feed that trains were able to call at platform one at Basingstoke railway station, but not platforms two to five.
