A CHINESE buffet restaurant in Basingstoke has had to make imp-rovements after it came under fire over its hygiene standards.

Wusungdan, in Winchester Street, at Top of The Town, was visited by a food safety officer from the borough council on June 14.

A rating scheme, which is run by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council in partnership with the Food Standards Agency, gave the restaurant nought out of five for its hygiene.

The hygiene rating shows how closely the business is meeting the requirements of food hygiene law.

Officers inspecting businesses look at various aspects of hygiene, including how food is handled, prepared, cooked, reheated, cooled and stored.

They also inspect the condition of the building, including cleanliness, and how the business manages and records what it does to make sure that food is safe.

At the end of the inspection, the business is given one of the six ratings, from nought to five.

The food safety officer then explains to the person, who owns or manages the business, what improvements, if any, are needed to achieve the top rating of five, and the local authority then checks that these are made.

Tom Payne, environmental health manager at the borough council, said: “Follow-ing numerous revisits to the restaurant since June 14, and two statutory improvement notices, conditions have now improved considerably and all major works have been completed.

“We do not consider there to be any risk to health at the premises.”

Kenny Poon, manager at Wusungdan, declined to comment.
