AN OLYMPIC legacy project has been set up by students at a Basingstoke school.

The pupils at Cranbourne Business and Enterprise College, in Wessex Close, are teaching sport to around 35 primary school pupils including hockey, dodge ball and ultimate Frisbee at after-school sessions.

The PE department at Cranbourne has developed a programme in which students become sport leaders and sporting young ambassadors to help younger children learn to love sport and enjoy an active, healthy lifestyle.

The girls at Cranbourne are teaching hockey to Year 1 and 2 pupils from Kings Furlong Infant School, while the boys are running a variety of sessions for Year 5 and 6 children from the junior school.

Andy Kimber, PE teacher at Cranbourne, said: “These students have shown great enthusiasm, drive, commitment and responsibility, which is really positive for their own personal development.

“It’s also been a very positive exercise for the juniors to come here and meet our students to experience the extensive facilities that CBEC has to offer.”

Lydia Rayden, 14, has been a sports leader since last year, and said: “It’s good to help the younger pupils get involved in sport. I get to work and develop the skills and sports interest of other people, and the skills I have learned will be valuable in the future.”
