THIS was not quite the manoeuvre a learner driver was attempting when she crashed a Mercedes in a supermarket car park last night.

The 36-year-old woman was using the Lidl car park in West Ham, Basingstoke to practise driving in the automatic car when she accidentally put her foot on the accelerator rather than the brake, and shot over a wall at around 5.30pm.

The car ended up landing on its front bumper, with the woman and her 37-year-old husband in the front, and her two children in the passenger seats.

Dave Allen, crew manager at Basingstoke fire station, which is next door to the supermarket, said: “There was no one trapped in it. They all got out."

Vicky O'Hare, corporate communications officer for Hampshire Constabulary, confirmed that the driver was a learner and said she was taken to hospital with "serious leg injuries."
